Beverages and breakfast items make their mark on kids’ menus

According to Technomic’s MenuMonitor database, beverages are the most popular items found on kids’ menus in Canada. Some of the most common beverage varieties are soft drinks, iced tea, lemonade and milk. Despite the fact that health initiatives are underway at many chains, soda still remains the most common beverage on kids’ menus. However, we are still seeing the addition of healthier alternatives such as smoothies and juice.

Second on the list of leading kids’ menu items are breakfast dishes. The leading types of breakfast options include pancakes, breakfast platters and French toast, respectively. Pancakes and French toast are both filling, traditional breakfast items that are kid-friendly. Breakfast platters, on the other hand, provide young diners with variety, often combining items like eggs, bacon, breakfast starches and fruit.

Thirdly, we see that chicken dishes are a leading type of item on kids’ menus. Some of the most common chicken dishes on kids’ menus are chicken strips or nuggets (which appeared on 127 menus). Chicken strips and nuggets are widely accepted as child-friendly dining options, particularly because they are handheld and bite-sized. Additionally, grilled chicken and wings each have 16 menu mentions and fried chicken has 10 mentions.
