Experience Chef Joshna’s local food philosophy and “delicious food activism” at the first Harvest Wednesdays event of 2017 on March 29!
Expect big, bold, fresh delights coming out of the Gladstone Hotel’s kitchen in the coming months! As a pioneer of the local food movement in Toronto since 2006, the Gladstone Hotel welcomes brand new executive chef (and food activist) Joshna Maharaj! Hitting the floor running, Maharaj will be taking the reigns of the hotel’s signature Harvest Wednesdays farm-to-table culinary event (March 29, 2017, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.) where she invites Toronto to get a taste of the hyper-fresh flavours that will soon be found all over the Gladstone’s menu.
“Joshna’s combination of amazing cooking chops, creativity, commitment to fresh local food, and connection to people in food and farming, along with her deep understanding and commitment to food justice issues is a rare combination,” says Ayal Dinner, Executive Director at Greenest City. “What a great fit for a hotel that is committed to great food, supporting local producers, and community building!”
The Gladstone Hotel has been an international tastemaker for over a decade with its whimsical and unique artist designed hotel rooms and year-round arts programming. Now, the hotel is bringing that same investment in local makers and dedication to innovation to its food program.
“At the Gladstone, we are risk-takers and have pioneered innovative ideas that connect art with food, and hospitality with social justice” says Christina Zeidler, Chief Alchemist at the Gladstone Hotel. “Joshna’s irresistible creativity and deep commitment to our shared values will fulfill my vision by kicking the doors open for a new era of food at the Gladstone.”
Zeidler is not the only one excited about the Gladstone’s new family member—Toronto’s culinary community can’t wait to see and taste new flavours coming out of the Gladstone kitchen à la Maharaj.
“I am thrilled to see Joshna Maharaj bring her brand of delicious social activism to the arts hub at the Gladstone Hotel as the new executive chef,” says Jamie Kennedy, celebrity chef who introduced Maharaj and the Gladstone. “I’ll be there even more often now.”
“Joshna’s career has been spent working outside the typical restaurant box—with her experience in television, community food centres, hospitals and museums. She brings a wealth of good practices that aren’t often found in the average chef’s toolkit,” says Ivy Knight, culinary personality and writer. “And that’s just the activist side of the equation, her cooking chops aren’t too shabby either, and coupled with those of her Chef de Cuisine, Rudy Boquila, this promises to be one of the most exciting kitchens in the city.”
