QSRs update restaurant design for a better guest experience

As operators work to draw in customers and stand out from the competition, some QSRs are giving their restaurants a makeover, focusing on improving the guest experience with upgraded technology, streamlined operations, and updated design.

Redberry Restaurants Canada will be opening new versions of remodelled Burger King restaurants in Etobicoke, North York, Sudbury, and Mississauga, featuring a new “sizzle” design. The new concept will incorporate digital improvements, updated drive-thru and pick-up experiences, and signature design elements, among other upgrades:

  • Digital ordering kiosks that make it more convenient to place an order for dine-in or takeout
  • Enhanced drive-thru featuring double lanes and an automated drive-thru voice system
  • A designated pick-up area for seamless delivery and pick-up of digital orders
  • Interior design elements, including a “King Booth,” for large groups, a “Crown Wall” for photo ops

Subway has also launched a new “Fresh Forward 2.0” store concept, set to roll out globally in 2025. After testing the concept in several regions, guests reported that the improved design increased their likelihood of dining in and visiting Subway restaurants. As well as updating the ambiance of the restaurants, the new design will offer a digital update with self-serve kiosks, order-ready screens, and kitchen display systems for guest convenience and increased efficiency in the kitchen.

“Fresh Forward 2.0 is an exciting evolution of the design, ensuring we continue to future-proof our business and deliver on our brand promises of experience and convenience for both our guests and franchisees,” said Mike Kehoe, global chief development officer at Subway.

Pita Pit recently launched a revamped concept, adding a drive-thru element to its design. The addition of the drive-thru is meant to provide faster speed and better service. The new design incorporates:

  • Flexible footprints to accommodate traffic and location size
  • Dedicated lanes for app-based and third-party pickups
  • Automated queue gates for more efficient service and less errors
  • Upgraded features inside that include on-site kiosks and QR code-based pickups to speed up service

Updating design, adopting new technology, and focusing on efficiency can help restaurants bring in more traffic, serve more customers, revitalize the brand, and improve the guest experience.
