Retail Council of Canada calls for moratorium on commercial evictions in Ontario

Press Release

The Retail Council of Canada (RCC) released a press release today expressing that it stands side-by-side with its industry partners in calling on the Ontario government for a moratorium on commercial evictions.

In an open letter issued today, RCC drew attention to the urgent need for an immediate moratorium on commercial evictions, retroactive to April 1, 2020 and extending to August 31, 2020, in order to match the end of the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program application period (OCECRA in Ontario). “Rent relief remains a priority issue for our members and we continue to be deeply concerned that many landlords will ignore this voluntary program, which will inevitably result in a vast number of store closures,” the organization stated in the release.

Forty-eight per cent of RCC members indicated they have not been able to pay their rent and 34 per cent have indicated their landlords have threatened to either change their locks or evict them.
