Sandwich giant introduces new culturally-inspired sandwich to fulfill Canadians’ desire for ethnic flavours

Canadians who have an appetite for ethnic flavours and the desire to fulfill their flavourful ‘Sandwishes’ need to look no further than SUBWAY® restaurants and their new Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. Available for a limited time across Canada at participating SUBWAY® sandwich shops, the sandwich opens the door to a world of BBQ Canadians never knew existed – inspired by the flavours of Korea.

According to a recent survey conducted by Mintel1, a market intelligence agency, 72 per cent of Canadians are turning to ethnic-inspired dishes to break mealtime monotony with 38 per cent specifically interested in experiencing Korean dishes. The Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is the perfect balance of sweet and heat and is intended to appeal to those Canadians interested in exploring new ethnic flavours. Featuring tender, slow-roasted pulled pork tossed in a savoury glaze infused with a mix of soy, garlic, gochujang paste and sesame oil, the Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is best enjoyed with spinach, cucumber, green peppers and onions.

“The Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is part of SUBWAY® restaurants’ ongoing mission to make Sandwishes come true by providing Canadians with the opportunity to experience new flavours that reflect the multitude of cultures our country has to offer.” Says Kathleen Bell, Director of National Marketing, SUBWAY restaurants Canada. “Canadians have expressed a desire to try bolder culturally-diverse flavours and the Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich not only satisfies this desire, it has also enabled SUBWAY restaurants to stand at the forefront of this flavour trend with a new take on a summertime favourite.”

The SUBWAY Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is available at SUBWAY restaurants across Canada for a limited time. The suggested price is $5.49 for a 6-inch and $8.49 for a footlong.

The launch of the Korean BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich is supported by a national TV, radio and digital advertising campaign which will run from July 4 to August 31, 2016. Two versions of TV creative were created to launch the sandwich. The 0:30 second highlights the newsworthiness of this novel and unexpected sandwich to excite Canadians over this limited-time sandwich. The 0:15 second utilizes slow-motion food imagery to explain Korean cuisine flavour cues in an interesting way. Several agencies are supporting the launch. Public relations and social media support is being handled by Veritas Communications. Creative concept was developed by Sid Lee. All media buying was coordinated by Carat.
