Mother's Day

Serving up success for Mother’s Day dining

Dining out is a popular choice on Mother’s Day, offering restaurant operators the opportunity to drive traffic and raise revenues as groups gather for the occasion. The holiday was restaurants’ biggest day of the year in 2025, increasing restaurant traffic 12 per cent year over year, and restaurateurs need to plan for another busy day this year.

Here are some of the trends that can help operators execute a successful Mother’s Day this year:

  • Moms prefer dining out (42 per cent) and for 62 per cent, dining out is an important part of the Mother’s Day celebration. Create a special menu, treat moms to a new unique experience, and market the festivities to help fill those tables.
  • 38 per cent of gatherings are multigenerational, and that could affect reservations, staffing, menu planning, and more. While 30 per cent of reservations are for four people, the number of tables for six or more diners increased by 13 per cent in 2025, so operators need to consider plan for serving larger tables and experiencing less turnover.
  • 12 p.m. is the most popular time to dine on that day, so destinations that offer lunch or brunch may have an advantage, but operators looking to draw in a crowd should plan a day celebration that appeals to the majority of guests.
  • Reservations often happen last minute, with 19 per cent of bookings made two days before, 24 per cent of bookings made within 24 hours of the day, and five per cent made within 90 minutes of the reservation time. When it comes to seating and reservations, operators should consider that these last-minute booking could occur, affecting inventory, staffing, and more. If you have an outdoor seating area, opening it up once optimal weather is confirmed could help accommodate last-minute guests. Offering a waitlist can also help to keep the restaurant full for the holiday.
  • In past years, the average spend was $187 per party for Mother’s Day dining, and while 87 per cent expect to spend more this year than in the past, value is a key factor in today’s consumer dining experiences. Consider adding value with unique offerings, perks, or giveaways to try and provide an elevated experience for your guests.

Mother’s Day is a special occasion for many families, and operators need to plan and prepare to execute a special experience for their guests.
