Mastering patio season

With patio season in full swing, operational efficiency is more important than ever for restaurateurs. Patio sales can represent up to 49 per cent of total sales during the busy season, and with 81 per cent of restaurants now offering outdoor dining, the competition is fierce.

According to TouchBistro’s 2026 Patio Season Guide for Restaurants, operators can execute expertly by focusing on a few crucial elements. Here’s a look at some of the guide’s findings and stats to help restaurateurs better manage this year’s patio season:

  • More than 80 per cent of operators reported that patio visits increased in the past year, up 30 per cent on average, and over 30 per cent of operators have seen larger group sizes this past year. This means a focus on staffing, efficient scheduling, and service are crucial for exceptional guest experiences.
  • About 30 per cent of operators have increased their patio seating capacity in the past year, so there are even more options for outdoor dining that guests can choose. Promote your space by updating your Google profile, social media and website, and sending email or SMS blasts to stay top of mind and keep seats filled.
  • Make your patio a destination all on its own by offering patio-only menus, LTOs, or events to attract guests that you can count on to return again and again, building loyalty and dependable income.
  • 39 per cent of operators plan to add private events this year, so consider whether this could be a revenue-generator for your restaurant. If it makes sense for your business, create a strategy that allows you to grow your profits without adding stress to your staff or current operations.
  • Leverage technology to add efficiency with tools like scheduling software, tableside ordering, digital reservations, upgraded kitchen display systems, and more to optimize your operations.
  • More than 80 per cent of patio operators are optimistic about the future of their business and having a second space is part of the reason, but using data, customer feedback, and a proactive approach can help operators reach the success they are striving for this season.

Patio season doesn’t just mean adding staff; it means adopting an overall seasonal strategy to compete and thrive through the summer.
