Protein packs a punch on 2026 restaurant menus

As health-conscious consumers increasingly drive many of the menu trends, protein continues to dominate diner demand. Recent research shows that 69 per cent of Canadians say they plan to eat more protein in 2026, 81 per cent consider protein essential for their health, and 44 per cent list cost as a barrier to getting enough protein.

With competition so fierce in the foodservice industry, many QSRs have introduced items that focus on this growing diner trend:

Subway Canada recently introduced the Fresh Fit Menu, featuring five 6″ subs, with at least 21g of protein each, and under 500 calories. Guests can choose from Rotisserie-Style Chicken, Classic Turkey, Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, Steak & Cheese, or Tuna from the new menu.

Second Cup has introduced new beverages this season, adding the Mocha Power Latte with 18g of protein, the Matcha Focus Smoothie with 13 g, and the Vanilla Bean Power Latte with 17g. The lineup is complete with the Power Cookie, a plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-friendly snack offering 11g of protein for on-the-go customers.

Dunkin’ has added protein milk to the menu, partnering with Grammy award-winner Megan Thee Stallion to promote the new Mango Peach and Strawberry Protein Refreshers, along with the Caramel Chocolate Iced Protein Latte, Almond Iced Protein Matcha Latte, and Iced Protein Latte with Sugar-Free Vanilla. The seasonal menu features additional items, including the Caramel Chocolate Shakin’ Espresso, Cocoa Cloud Latte, Berry Moonlight Daydream Refresher, and Golden Chocolate Donut.

Papa John’s is testing out a new protein-packed crust for reward members at an Atlanta location for one day only, offering an 8-inch meat or veggie option with 55 grams of protein. Depending on the success of the venture, the test could signal a trend prompting other pizza operators to try to compete in this market.

Freshii has joined the protein craze with a lineup of Lifestyle Bowls, offering fewer carbs and fats. The new menu includes the Macro Balanced Bowl, Harmony Bowl, and Protein Power Bowl. These bowls will be available for a limited time at participating locations across Canada.

Chipotle is launching its first-ever high-protein menu in Canada and the U.S., featuring Grab and Go Cups, essentially meat in a cup, with the option of adobo chicken or steak. This snack is joined by the Double High Protein Bowl and the High Protein-High Fibre Bowl, which range from 15 to 81 grams per serving.

As health trends continue to evolve, so too should operators looking to drive traffic and attract attention to their restaurants with LTOs and new menu items in 2026.
