Nostalgia continues as a theme on QSR menus

One of the most popular restaurant trends this year was adding an element of nostalgia to food and beverage menus, and with 71 per cent of customers looking for flavours that remind them of their childhood, it makes sense that even more QSRs are getting in on this trend.

Earlier this year, Tim Hortons brought back four of their retro donut flavours as part of their 60th-anniversary celebrations, including the Walnut Crunch, Dutchie, Blueberry Fritter, and Cinnamon Sugar Twist in the lineup.

Chick-fil-A has announced this month’s return of the banana pudding milkshake, after a 13-year hiatus. Along with the return of the milkshake, the Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich is also back, featuring a spicy version this time around as a response to guest feedback.

Taco Bell is testing a nostalgic menu with five items originally released from the 1960s to the 2000s. The menu features some of the most popular items from across the decades, such as the Tostada, Green Burrito, Meximelt, Gordita, and Caramel Apple Empanada.

McDonald’s has re-launched a few of their most popular campaigns, like Halloween’s boo buckets,  originally offered in 2016 and resurrected in 2023. Earlier this season, the chain also brought back $5 Happy Meal deals, featuring a McChicken or McDouble, four-piece chicken nuggets, fries and a drink. Originally, the LTO was a four-week promotion, but it has been extended through the summer.

As diners clamour for new experiences and flavours, they are also drawn to tastes that remind them of their childhood. According to recent research, 15 per cent of Gen Z and 14 per cent of millennials feel a stronger connection to the past than the future, fueling the demand for nostalgic experiences and menus.

Whether operators embrace this trend with traditional favourites on the menu, bring back popular LTOs, or add some newstalgia with their twist on the classics, featuring fan-favourite items remains something that attracts and interests diners.
